Passage (Sormiou)
You went down so far under,
The emerald swallowed you up in dark,
Shadows without sky, without sun,
Down through the long passage,
Toward what you did not know.
You followed the slender way, only
Because you could not turn around,
And the dark felt like the belly
Of a fish, so that you swam of your own
Accord no longer, but held on to a fragile rib,
Pulling you in closer than you ever wanted.
It was at that moment, when if you had been naked,
You would have felt the breath break point,
An opening unfolded, right where you meant to give up
And would have given in:
Out of the sea’s dark hall and into a cave,
Its interior painted 2,000 years ago, beneath the water now,
So that in the whole world only you know
What is found. printable
