Bubinga Sideboard 2009

November 2008 to March 2009

I found this amazing Bubinga at Soboba and knew I’d find a special project for it. There was enough for most major parts. The amount of figured wood limited my ability to completely match horizontally and vertically, but I am pleased with the outcome. Personal info, graphics, photography and design information plus e-mail address maybe found at www.tombuhl.com.

Blow on it and make a wish
Jig for Soss Hinge mortise. Thanks Marc Spagnuolo, aka TheWoodWhisperer
Love that fresh orange

A very subtle taper cut on Legs
More orange saw dust
Cleaning up burn marks
Putting the bevel on a Leg
Now it is time to make some drawers
Half-blind dovetails for Drawer fronts
I could do this with my eyes closed...and some of my cuts look like I did.
Routing shallow mortises for Drawer Pulls
Hey, this might actually be completed some day.
Every good sideboard deserves some doors. Rails and Stiles prepped.
Fits pretty well
One coat of finish before placing panels in door frames.
Fitting Legs one more time.
One Leg glued in place, the far leg is just for clamping at this point.
The first coat of finish is a favorite time for woodworkers everywhere.
The top gets the card scraper treatment.
Fitting drawer stop before drawer bottom is in place.
I like it.
Cutting bevel on Padauk Door Pull
Routing very small rabbets on Door Pull, note beveled aux fence
Drawer bottoms get rabbets
Perhaps the fit is a bit too snug!
Only special gallery visitors will ever see this view.
Screw secures drawer bottom.
Shiplapped slats fit in grooves, molding at top. wilure., molding at top will secure.
Progress
Before the back slats are in place
Checking fit of top
Sideboard is in the house. Attaching the top.
Yep, that is a lot of pix, but worth it IMHO.
