This newsprint poster was created for a climbing gym in Hawaii that drew the island’s most daring athletes. “Eddie Would Go” is a popular Hawaiian phrase after the legendary big wave island native Eddie Aikau.

Eddie was a big wave surfer and lifeguard on the island’s North Shore who disappeared in a rescue attempt. Eddie braved surf in the most dangerous conditions to save those in distress — conditions no one else dared to challenge. Some years after his death the phrase “Eddie Would Go” became the rally cry for anyone fearing big waves or test of character.
