Here’s the first draft of the poem I performed at the Bowery Poetry Club last Tuesday. It’s changed a little, but you’ll get the drift, and it’s got the energy of that first time being read aloud. The picture is from last week in Venezuela.

What Poetry Is: An Ars Poetica

In this poem I take about 100 definitions of what poetry is, mix them all together, and make them rhyme. The definitions span over two thousand years, and if you recognize a few it’s because I stole from such visionaries as Dickinson, Wordsworth, Shakespeare, Macleish, Parra, Votaire, Collins, and many others. Where You Begin and I End

This is a poem for two voices, one male one female, that I wrote at least 10 years ago. Over the years, I’ve performed it with various teammates and friends, but it was never recorded. So today, after figuring out how to make my voice sound more female in Garage Band, I recorded it performing both parts myself. If there are any duos out there who would like to perform it themselves I’d be happy to send you the text.

I’ve had the idea for this poem for a long time, and I’ve finally found the right people to help me put it together. But in order to clue them in to what I’m thinking, I needed to get my own version recorded. So here it is, a rough mix of a poem about missing my mother’s death by 45 minutes. With any luck, I will premiere this poem live at the CD release party for "Icarus Airlines" on Thursda, December 6th, at the Bowery Poetry Club!
