Thanks to an amazing 50th birthday gift that Ruth received from her sister Jann and husband Tony, we found ourselves with flights in and out of Tokyo and 10 days to have a look around. We planned a fairly modest itinerary, visiting first Tokyo, then Kyoto, then a Buddhist temple community on a mountaintop ... Koyasan, then back to Tokyo for a few days before flying out.

To avoid picture-fatigue I have split the trip into five sections in chronological order. This page is the first section, T1, a few days in Tokyo. These pix are links to their respective pages.

Japan - Tokyo

this map shows those three main destinations. We travelled everywhere by train - subway and surface trains. The transport system there was very good.

Below is the view from our hotel room in Ueno, an historic district in Tokyo and our first base.

I recorded some soundscapes on my ipod and movies on my stills camera - the last two links will take you to those pages.
