Bouldering - Hueco Tanks Texas

Spring Break in Hueco Tanks State Park - El Paso Texas

Bouldering in Hueco Tanks State Park is a spring break tradition for Walkabout.  Six students join faculty member Perry Key for a week of bouldering, historical study, and lounging in in the west Texas sun.  Bouldering is rock climbing's version of vertical chess.  Success is often the result of months of training, intense focus, and problem solving skills.  Success is not measured by getting to the top, but by the grace, composure, and joy one has between the bottom and top.  Many times students will focus their week's attention on a particular boulder problem that frustrates and inspires them.  It is a test of patience and composure - physical and emotional.

Hueco Tanks State Park is an mystical combination elusive boulder problems, ancient Native American pictographs, and caves that form a maze of passages to explore.  Perry Key is not only a chemistry teacher, coach, and Walkabout guide for Baylor, he is also an official historical and climbing guide for Hueco Tanks State Park.  With Perry's expertise and knowledge, spring break at Hueco is far more than rock climbing.  It is sharing time with  faculty members while learning to appreciate and respect the ancient history of where we explore.
