Greeting Card and Lace Guest Tray
I like to leave a little treat for guests who come to stay: bottled water, fruit, chocolates or the visitor’s favorite snack. So I decided the best way to display these welcoming little treats was to create a tray that matched my guest room.
This tray was originally a simple unpainted pine piece I got at Michaels. First I painted it in some vintage celadon green that I had left over from painting my livingroom walls. Then I chose two Victorian-styled greeting cards I’d gotten in a pack from TJ Maxx, and cut off their backs so just the main image remained. Next I cut apart interesting shapes from a lace doily I’d gotten at the thrift store. (Because the lace was stiff and not of a fine quality, it was easier to cut apart and arrange.) All of the items were arranged on a thin layer of Aleene’s Tacky Glue, and when it was dry, then glue was layered over the tray top.
Initially I used a spray varnish on all of the tray’s surface, with special attention to the tray to. Because the spray produced such thin coats, the look wasn’t as inlaid as I’d hoped. It would have required an amazing amount of coats to a achieve the look I was hoping for. Eventually, I went over it all with three layers of Deft paint-on varnish, and that integrated the cards and lace right into the tray, creating a smoother surface that was easy to place dishes, bottled water and decanters on.
