The Dollar General in my area has four-foot-tall fake Christmas trees for just $10. So the price, along with my obsessive love of hall-decking, led me to put a Christmas tree in almost every room.
The “fun fir” here was made specifically for my Cottage/Shabby-style guest room. The entertaining thing about this was decorating it entirely in vintage accessories. Brooches hang from thin silver ribbon. Clip-on earrings snap to branches. And instead of traditional garland, I used narrow scarves, rhinestone necklaces, and strings of pearls. I carried the theme through with lights in the shape of white pearl beads-- though I did have to mask off the bulbs and spray the green connecting wire white using a plastic-adherent spray paint. (I would recommend intentionally buying lights on white wire, if you plan to use a white tree). And for the tree skirt? I used a vintage pillow sham, but you could also use tulle, a stole, an apron or-- yes-- even a vintage skirt. I topped mine with a hat, but I can also see a bridal veil or a tiara working well here.
Tips to remember:
•Consider the color scheme of your room when choosing the colors for your tree. A white tree decorated in pastels works well in a Shabby Chic or cottage setting. A green tree with jewel tones may be more appropriate for Victorian and country rooms.
•A wide selection of lights are available today, some of which look like jewelry themselves. Avoid lights that could distract from the theme and color palette. Just remember, green wires on white trees: bad.
•Plan ahead: Pick up vintage-styled jewelry and accessories any time of year, and set them aside. This makes decorating quick, simple and stress-free! I got almost everything on this tree from a thrift store.
