Art Nouveau Bisque
When I was little, I was just convinced the figural vase on the right, which was my mother’s, was of Betsy Ross. I have absolutely no idea why. But even so, I loved this vase. I even recall playing scenes with it. (Thought I can’t remember what, exactly-- Sewing the flag, perhaps.) So after not seeing my mother’s vase for 20-some years, imagine my utter shock to discover that it was not only Not Betsy Ross: it was art nouveau.
I’ve been enchanted with bisque pieces like it ever since, and have expanded my collection by lucky finds at thrift stores and on Ebay. Many of these bisque vases, planters and matchstick holders were made in Germany, th
ough a similar style can be found in pieces from Occupied Japan. I estimate the age on the ones I own ranges from late 1800s to as recent as about 1950.

I’m particularly fond of the organic art nouveau lines of many of them. Not to mention the quantity of cherubs. Active cherubs. Cherubs on a mission, ornery and up-to-something, if only to be a little cheeky. That’s the way I like ‘em.
Like this guy. Somebody spent time adding that delicate color.
And if anyone has any additional historical information on these types of bisque pieces-- common manufacturers, etc-- I’d love to hear about it. Most of the ones you see here are unmarked.
