by Claudio Grafulla
Edited by Leah Sayad

Claudio Grafulla (1810 - 1880) grew up on the Spanish island of Minorca and immigrated to the United States in 1838. He settled in New York and joined Lothier’s Brass Band, which was attached to the 7th Regiment Band of New York.
In 1860 he was asked to form a new 7th Regiment Band of 38 musicians, which he directed until his death in 1880. Under his leadership the band gained a fine reputation and grew to include 50 musicians. Grafulla composed and arranged for his band and is well remembered today for his Washington Grays March, written at the onset of the Civil War in 1861.
