Julius Ernst Wilhelm Fučík (1872 - 1916) was a Czech composer and conductor of military bands. He spent much of his life conducting military brass bands. A prolific composer, Fučík wrote more than 300 marches, polkas, and waltzes, earning him a reputation as the “Bohemian Sousa.” His music is still today used to fan patriotism in the Czech Republic.
Entry of the Gladiators was composed in 1897 while Fučík was leader of the 86th Infantry Regiment Band in Sarajevo. The tile arose from the composer's abiding interest in Roman history, but the work is best known as a circus march under its subtitle "Thunder and Blazes."
