This website is dedicated to the preservation of The Weusi Artists Collective,  a group of African-American artists,  who came together during the 1960’s Black Arts Movement to explore art influenced by African culture. Their work was an important contribution to the Harlem community and other artists around the world.

The Weusi Artists Collective's mission was, and still is, to educate the community by using their art as a blueprint for African American artists. Weusi in Swahili means Blackness, and the name of the group itself helped exert the organization to take the lead in the Black Arts Movement. The name of the Artists Collective expanded to Weusi-Nyumba Ya Sanaa Academy of Fine Arts and Studies.

The Weusi Artists Collective is made up of visual artists who resided in Harlem and  through their love for art, they continued to create “Black Art for Black People”.

This website has been created through the efforts of A New Generation of Artists (NGOA), a group of young artists at The Children’s Art Carnival.  The Children’s Art Carnival in Harlem is a visual arts school that serves children and youth throughout New York City, ages 4 through 21. These young artists, with the help from the Carnival,  have undertaken a multi-faceted project, which is to explore and document  the Weusi Artists Collective in context of the Black Arts Movement  and their own lives.

This project is an extension of  an ongoing Intergenerational series coordinated by The Art Carnival, entitled “The Living Treasures of Harlem.” The Treasures are members of the Harlem community who have contributed to the development of the Arts and Culture in Harlem and beyond.
