Paris World Cup 2005
Paris World Cup 2005
Team Supreme finally managed to make its first step on the European scene. We participated in the 7-man world cup that took place in Eurodisney, just outside Paris, France. The event was superb. First of all there were five fields all of which were very carefully set up making up room for the teams to discover many different lanes and game plays. In addition the XL turf was the playing surface for this event and I can say that it was the best turf on which I (and my teammates) have ever played. The trade show was a little bit too squeezed into a very small area but even like that there were more than enough stands. The fact that the fields were inside Disneyworld made it extremely easy for the teams to move around, a free shuttle service between Eurodisney and the hotels made life easy for us balers, it took no more than 10 minutes to get from our rooms to our fields.
Down to the grass now,
The team joined in Division 3 in which there were 52 teams (!), all battling for a spot in the top 16 of the Sunday club. Our team from day 1 had some problems, our basic one was that out of our 7 players only 3 had ever played before a millennium event and a 7 man format game. This made it somewhat difficult for those other 4 to get used to a "new" format. This transition took no more than two games but again it was a problem in the first games and in the field walking. We were playing Friday morning and Saturday afternoon. Our Friday games included the division 1 and 2 games. We had the chance to play the former DMA division 1 champions and the former Max masters division 2 champions, sadly we lost both games but we certainly played well and could have drawn a win out of the division 2 game that came down to a 1on 1. From there on we managed to score only wins in our division 3 games, climbing up on the 5th place on Saturdays draw, having 6 wins out of 8 games. Getting fifth into the Sunday club was something that filled us with confidence and satisfaction. On Sunday we were playing the 4th and two teams that were below the 10th spot. It was bad luck that we were playing two games in the dye field that was certainly our worst walked field. We managed to win the first game and went on to play our second game with a team that we had won on Saturday on the same (millennium) field. The game was a 6 on 4 on our favor, we had 3 players in the 50Às line and we were controlling the airways. But a 1 for 1 for a hopper hit resulted in loosing our 2 snake guys and thus our tape remained empty. Another quick elimination brought the game down to a 4on3 on their side, bad calls and inability to fill in key spots resulted in us loosing a game which not only we really needed but which also we easily could have won. Our morale was shaken after that play and we went on very disorganized to play our third and last game of the day, our only hope for a spot in the top 4 was only if we won that game with 5 bodies alive, instead of that we quickly dropped that game giving to Paintstorm their ticket to the semis which later proved to be also the ticket for the first place. We finished in a disappointing 10th place
It was a great experience and I hope I will have the chance to go abroad with this team again. We left from Paris with both feelings of satisfaction and disappointment. We managed to make a pretty good first appearance on an international event but we all knew we could do much better and although 12th of 52 might look not so bad, we all know we deserve and we can do better. Letting aside the games we all had a terrific time on and off the fields. Team Supreme would also like to thank the two Players from team Immortals that joined the Supreme ranks for this event. We would also like to thank very much Dimi moustroufis for being great help in the backstage and helping us very much for getting ready before each game. Also thanks to our groupies for cheering for us.
I want to thank all of the guys that played their best out there: Teo Callitsis, Dimitris Kirtsos, Angel Moshopoulos, Jerry Gianopoulos, Nick Loulis, George Daskalakis and Alex Robbs. Props also to PMI Europe for helping us out with the paint.
