The Divine Maternity

Our Lady of La Leche Shrine

Our Lady of La Leche Shrine is the first grotto dedicated to the Blessed Mother here in the United States!

The devotion to Our Lady of the Milk goes back to the 4th Century.  As the Mother nurtured her infant at the breast, so the Church nurtures us through the Sacraments.

St. Giles Feast September 1st

Patron Saint of Nursing Infants & Mothers

“Like a child quieted at its mother’s breast.”       -Psalms 131:2

“I carried you nine months in my womb, and nursed you for three years, and have reared you and brought you up to this point in your life, and have taken care of you.”

                                                                        -2 Macabees 7: 27

The Mother who complains because a new child presses against her bosom seeking nourishment at her breast is foolish, ignorant of herself and unhappy.”

(The Pope Speaks, The Teachings of the Pope Pius XII by Pantheon Books Inc.

333 Sixth Avenue, New York 14, New York, Copyright 1957, p. 48)

Proper attitudes should be similarly be engendered toward the nursing of infants.

Children, especially the younger ones should not be forbidden to see mother breast-feeding the baby.  Moderns are accustomed to all kinds of immodesty, yet are prudish in this beautiful act.  A curious inversion of values indeed!  A mother should be proud of her duty and function.  It should never be considered disgusting or shameful.”

(Parents, Children and the Fatcts of Life by Fr. Henry V Sattler.  St. Anthony Guild Press, NJ Copyright 1959 p. 9)

Baby Wearing, Breast-Feeding and Babies

Mom’s Know All About Those Things!

Visit “LIFE IN A SLING” PHOTO ALBUM

Baby-Wearing:  Hands free means walks, dishes, laundry, vacuuming, holding a toddler too, bills paid, sewing done, dinner made!  When baby comes first, the sling allows mom’s to get these things done with two hands INSTEAD OF ONE!  The happiest babies I have ever known are the ones next to my heart all day and all night exploring the world at mom’s height with the floor out of sight!  Later they get down and crawl abut know that mom or dad’s arms are a free for all with baby-wearing.

Breast-Feeding Baby can go anywhere No bottles. It’s the best thing for the baby nutrition wise!  Makes discipline easy for a tired babe who will smile at mama’s bubba and say goodbye to her cranky ways!  Sacagawea knew the trick as she carried around her little Pomp into Oregon Territory with their sticks.

Babies:  A world without babies is a world without joy to assure us in our old age to have a dults around to carry on without our cares.  A baby is better than evening TV when he learns to walk and jumb and be free.  A baby brings what brings people together to help and to hold and to love forever.

I have a dream that someday every hospital and midwife will give out a free baby sling to each new mother so that she can be equipped and encouraged to enjoy one of the most pleasant treasures of motherhood for both she and baby -closeness, contentment and common sense!  Would you like to help my dream come true?

My slings saved me many a headache, many a back ache (because all babies just don’t want but NEED to be held), allowed me to hold my crying toddler without disturbing my sleeping baby, helped me get my chores done in a timely manner but most of all turned my colicky babies into smiling ones and helped nurture that bright wit in each child by letting them see the world every day just as I did -up nice and high -what a vista!  Nothing like seeing the world from mama’s sling!
