West Windsor is an environmental leader in New Jersey.  West Windsor was selected as the first NJ Green Town USA in 2003 by the NJ Environmental Lobby.  Our township has joined municipalities across the nation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curb climate change by embracing sustainability as a guiding principle for development, as well as being a new basis for directing and informing both our municipal government and the broader West Windsor community about ways to reduce their environmental ‘footprint’. Sustainable development means working to preserve social, economic and environmental conditions necessary to sustain a high quality of life.  A key component of the West Windsor Sustainability Plan is to educate our citizens regarding West Windsor’s work to date, highlight our future plans and programs and share suggestions as to how residents can make their own contributions toward a greener West Windsor.

On October 3, 2009 the West Windsor Environmental Commission, West Windsor Community Farmers’ Market, FOWWOS (Friends of West Windsor Open Space), the West Windsor Arts Council, and the West Windsor Bicycle & Pedestrian Alliance will host the 2009 GroWW Environmental Education Fair from 10 am to 2 pm at the West Windsor Community Farmers’ Market in the Vaughn Road Parking Lot. Citizens, governmental agencies, corporate exhibitors and local businesses will come together to illustrate and celebrate opportunities to make West Windsor, Mercer County, the State and indeed the world more environmentally sustainable.

The fair will be free to the public, with free parking.  Entertainment will be provided by the West Windsor-Plainsboro School District students.  The fair will include recycling stations as well as activities to promote sustainability among the youth in the community.  With the success of the inaugural GroWW fair in 2008, and the presence of the weekly West Windsor Farmers’ Market and a Wellness Fair at the venue, we expect the fair to attract more than 2500 visitors.

The 2008 GroWW Environmental Fair attracted over 3000 residents from all over Mercer County.  Over 60 government, business and non-profit groups highlighted their efforts in green building, environmentally friendly products, tips on gardening, municipal environmental plans, recycling opportunities and a host of other means for sustainable living.
