Copa Mundial/World Cup 2006

I promised to share my favorite teams for the World Cup. Smart money is on Brazil to win the Cup this year. However, I’ve had a keen interest in France since I correctly predicted they would win starting the Round of 16. France was a disappointment in 2002, but they seem to have recouped over the last year. Brazil may be overconfident considering I did not like Ronaldinho’s performance during the UEFA Cup this year (of course Barcelona still did win).
Second tier teams capable of going all the way include Portugal, Spain, and Germany (home turf advantage can always give a team a boost, although not to this year’s team). Interesting teams to look out for include Serbia and Montenegro (formerly Yugoslavia), Netherlands, and the Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire). If you are a betting person, I would wait until the end of the first round to see how the teams are fairing in Germany. Typically a dominant team will make its presence felt early on. The way the seeding of the teams is done by FIFA, the strongest teams are paired with progressively lower ranked teams. Although this may seem biased, the groupings actually help the lower ranked teams play at the highest level to gain experience while saving big match-ups for later on in the competition.
As with any sport, the outcome is never certain. A few lesser known teams may go far in this year’s Cup. The games with newcomer teams are always the best ones to see. My TiVo will be recording every World Cup game this year. More details will be posted when the World Cup starts. Don’t forget, this year’s World Cup starts on June 9th and games air on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2.
