Is it odd to dream of large mechanized robots engaged in battle like something out of those crazy Japanese cartoons? Maybe I’ve subconsciously absorbed the Transformers movie trailer and my dreams are morphing this into large robots with fracking large guns. But the robots I dream of don’t “transform” into anything. They just shoot bullets and missiles and one of them has an awesome flame-thrower. I’m not a violent person and I don’t think robots are going to be as popular as people think (or as dangerous, think Terminator). They will be expensive and impractical for most average people (especially since the average income is $45k).
Sure, you may own a Roomba but I don’t consider that a robot at ALL. Yes, it is a mechanized vacuum cleaner that can “learn” to clean your home, but do we honestly think a Roomba is the future of robotics? NO. Okay, I will concede that the Roomba is a robot by today’s definition inasmuch as Da Vinci’s glider was an airplane. We are surrounded by images of robots from the battle bots on Comedy Central (years ago) to the demonstrations of Honda’s Asimo (NOTE: I went to Carnegie Mellon University... robot nerd central). The media is always fascinated when the cops bust out their fancy bomb diffusing robots or when someone builds a mock-up of R2D2 in their garage. Robots, robots, everywhere. Maybe this is why I have these dreams. I’m surrounded by robots.
So where am I going with all this... the robots are here! To have dreams of them is no stranger than dreaming of your “dream” car or “dream” girl (for geeks, robots will probably be the closest thing to a girl)... crap! I’m NOT a geek. NEVER! Tonight I’ll have to think of something different. Perhaps I’ll dream of winning the Olympics... for sexiness... hey, it’s a dream!
