SMALL-TOWN U.S.A.

Around America in 80 Days
(Just like Jules Verne’s book but without the balloon . . . and the elephant . . . and the steamship . . . and the small Frenchman).

It’s early January 2007 and I’m writing this in an Amsterdam coffee-shop . . . no, not that sort, this one serves coffee. It’s raining (as it has been constantly since I got here five days ago) and the wind is howling up VERYWINDYSTRAAT (or whatever the street is called). I’ve moved here with my new job and it seems a little hard to believe that only a matter of weeks have passed since I completed this trip - life can move so fast sometimes.

For those of you finding this site for the first time - welcome. You’ll find inside a daily blog that I posted from the road as I traveled the continental United States visiting the smallest town (by population) in all of the contiguous 48 states. It’s sometimes funny, sometimes maudlin, mostly informative and occasionally a little dull . . . much like travel itself but I hope the good bits are worth the effort. There’s also 11 weeks worth of photographs and they’re definitely worth spending a bit of time perusing (especially if you’re at work). If you’re a little pressed for time, say if you have a meeting in ten minutes or your boss has just buzzed you to ‘bring in the Gazinski file’ (a line I once heard in a Petrocelli episode and which I’ve been waiting to use for 20 years) then just skim through the two BEST OF sections - these are where I’ve collected what I think are the best photos of the trip (the clue is in the name).

For those of you checking in for a second or third time - hello again, nice to have you back. Thanks for your support during the trip (especially the e-mails) and for helping me break the target of 10,000 hits on this site - much appreciated . . . now, how about 20,000?

These 80 days were, without a doubt, some of the best of my life and, if you have harbored a secret dream for years to get out and complete some magical road-trip my only advice is to do it. I’m not for one second suggesting that you leave your partner or sell your children but if the only thing holding you back is a job or fear, trust me, there’s always another job and fear is just something put in place to make sure the best experiences in life don’t get too crowded.

I hope this website may wet someone’s appetite for adventure and they too will set off on some interesting trip. If you do, send me an e-mail, I’d love to read all about it.

Best wishes to you all for a great 2007.

Terence
