At my first internship during college I helped produce a high-quality, weekly publication for 40,000 readers. My boss was an old-school editor and the best teacher I ever had. Each week, I’d spend time at a metal type foundry in south central Los Angeles. The men working there taught me the finer points of typography and design. We set all the type and graphics by hand. I would have never become as discerning about the subtleties of traditional letterforms and aesthetics had I started my design education on a computer.
