El Jardin

We are a core group of innovators, educators, healers, business people, farmers & gardeners, parents & grandparents who are joining together as a small intentional community to create a delightful and sustainable lifestyle for ourselves, as well as a model that can serve millions of people who are hungry for a healthier, more balanced way of living.

“Together we can do what no one of us

can do alone.”

Who are we?

Does this resonate with you, too?

Who are we?

We are located in the very lovely southern part of Ecuador’s Valley of Longevity that  is also known as "the Sacred Valley", near the popular tourist destination of Vilcabamba and the city of Loja, Ecuador’s “cultural capital”.  Our farm consists of three hundred and fifty beautiful acres that include flat and fertile farmlands bordering over a mile of riverfront. The land rises up and away from the river to include higher fields (with beautiful views) and a variety of lovely micro-climates, to the top of tall mountains, with spectacular 360º vistas that go for many miles in all directions.  A network of trails winds through the property.

We enjoy a mile-high environment with 60°-80° year ‘round low-humidity climate.

We are very near the Podocarpus National Park— The “Andean Jewel in the Crown” of Ecuador’s protected areas, filled with exotic orchids & wildlife.

We are just a few hours travel to jungle rainforest, mountain cloud forest & pacific coast beaches.

El Jardin"The Garden"

  1. Land Preservation —  We are putting a large percentage   of our mountains into the equivalent of a conservation easement and plan to reforest many areas with native species.  To start the process, this year we're planting 1,000 trees.  Our vision is to make our development “footprint” as light and lovely as possible, with few houses and other structures. We will leave the fields in various kinds of organic production.

  1. Organic Production — We are strongly committed to improving the soil structure.  To this end, we've introduced a great deal of composted material (more to come) and have been planting many types of fruit and nut trees. About 600 fruit & nut trees have been planted to date.  We've also planted 100 coffee bushes, organic sugar cane & corn, as well as a variety of berry bushes and grape vines.  Our large organic garden supplies a great variety of vegetables and herbs, both culinary and medicinal.  After less than a year here, we are already selling some of our organic food and health products including chickens, oranges & herbs.

  1. Sustainable & Innovative Design — In the design of community facilities, we are combining a variety of technologies, old and new.  We seek to find the balance between a high-quality living environment and a low carbon footprint.  Also, the climate lends itself to a wonderful indoor-outdoor style of living which invites innovative architecture.

Our Vision Includes

  1. Healthy Lifestyle Choices — Organic foods, exercise, extensive walking trails, preventive medicine, spa & healing services—all in a low stress and beautiful environment.

  2. Economic Development — Cottage industries and eco-businesses of various types.  Film and video production, art and handicrafts, computer / internet-based businesses, health products (organic produce, organic dried fruit, etc.), health and spa services (including Rolfing, Voice Dialogue, hot tubs, sauna, flotation tank, etc.), educational products (books, videos, seminars & workshops, small conferences, multi-media production, consulting services.)

  3. Learning Community — We will continually explore, demonstrate and model more enlivening social, economic and environmentally-sound ways of living.  High-speed internet connectivity & advanced communication skills will enable us to share our learning with the global community.

  4. Incubator Programs — We invite participation, in a mutually beneficial way, by highly talented & motivated people — artists, writers, musicians, healers & inventors.  We will offer, at reasonable rates, a small number of retreat “cabañas” for “cultural creatives”.

  5. Richly Diverse Participation — We invite you to join us as community members (part time or full time or going in with friends to buy a property in the community), as business partners, investors (traditional and innovative) or as "Patron Angels".  Our goal is to create win–win relationships with everyone, in both for-profit and non-profit structures.
