Beyond the winter garden...RVs..and beyond those, the dunes and ocean

Feb 4: After a Saturday of 36 degree cold rain and wind, postponing our workday till today, we basked at Andersen’s RV Park in weather that felt summery.  Even at this time of year there were quite a few RVs.  I’ve always found Andersen’s to have a happy and convivial atmosphere, with staff that makes the guests feel welcome and at home. Hydrangeas, Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ and ornamental grasses were trimmed.  Park dogs Tess and Rosie were petted (didn’t see the other park dog Arveena today), and six pugs tumbled out of a trailer…four adults and two pups…and romped around me while I pulled old annuals out of some whiskey barrel planters.  The pups were fat and soft and very distracting.

Hydrangeas were cut back....We leave the dried blossom heads up for winter interest.  These have a dramatic deep blue colour in late summer.  Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ was trimmed, having also been left up for winter structure and the winter garden was raked through and tidied up.  Some tall snowdrop flowers were in bloom, as was Euphobia characias wulfenii...extra early, because here it is against a warm wall.

We looked at a potential new job up north but it seems the possible client mostly wants us to draw a plan and have her do the work.  I am realizing that I don’t want to take on work that is not totally hands-on.  I’ll offer to walk through the landscape with her next time she is down to the beach, and will recommnend two books which might help her visualize a beachy and drought tolerant look: Beth Chatto’s Gravel Garden and Derek Jarman’s Garden.

By the way, I apologize for no pug pictures…I see I must carry the small camera in my pocket for important dog events.
