“Many thanks to all the students (instructors & technology support) who spent hours working on creating their unique programs featuring their community. I applaud the enterprising students who were part of this experience and did such an awesome job communicating with other student groups across the nation.” - Bev Mattocks, Consultant / Project Manager, Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC), Transforming Learning Through Collaborative Technologies
Our story
In November 2007, an exciting journey began for students in Mrs. Parks’ Broadcast Journalism program. Mrs. Parks submitted a proposal to the KC3 (Kids Creating Community Content) contest, developed by The Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC) and Tandberg. This contest challenged students to develop a virtual field trip about a resource or location in their area and present the VFT to other students somewhere in the United States.
The proposal was selected and on January 3, five students in Mrs. Parks’ class started the process of creating a VFT about the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Park in Spiro, OK - just 30 miles north of Howe, OK. The VFT is titled: “The Mound Builders, The Myth, The Legend: A Tale of Historic Treasures.” On February 12, 2008, Howe students delivered their VFT to 5th-6th grade students in Ms. McFarlane’s class in Galien, MI.
The presentation was a big hit with both the students and teacher. Read the comments from the students involved by choosing the “comments” link. The VFT is geared toward students in 5th-6th grade, and addresses multiple National Standards in English, Science, Social Studies and U.S. History. Learn more about how your class can “participate” in the VFT at the links to the right.
