The Story of “Lehigh Valley Rocks!!”

In December of 2005, long time friends, Butch Maloney (myself) and Tom Lefevre, were reunited after a few years of lost contact. During conversations and reminiscing of days gone past, Tom mentioned to me an idea that he had. “Wouldn’t it be cool to put together a compilation CD of some of the local Lehigh Valley hard rock/metal bands and make copies for some of our circle of friends?” Tom suggested. The idea was quickly met with open arms by myself and I told Tom that I would do whatever I could to help him out. After that night, and my return home to my current residence in Phoenix, AZ, Tom and I kept in touch, but with the busyness of our lives nothing materialized of the “Project”. A few months went by and in June of 2006, Tom again mentioned the idea to me again and also brought up the idea of putting together a documentary style movie of the Lehigh Valley hard rock music scene from the mid 1980’s to the early 1990’s. This time something definitely “clicked” in my head! Without hesitation, we both agreed to put together a tribute of not only the great Lehigh Valley hard rock/metal bands of that era, but a tribute for EVERYBODY that took place in that music scene.
The Lehigh Valley music scene had unquestionably an exorbitance of talent and was the springboard for many musicians that went on to national and international fame. Musicians such as Jimmy Degrasso, Greg Howe, Richie Kotzen, Robert Mason Kevin Miller and Kevin Soffera, to name a few, all got their start gracing many of the stages in the Allentown and surrounding areas. While these and other musicians went on to varying degrees of success individually, many other talented musicians and songwriters were blindly over looked by the fickle music business. Without question during 1984 to 1994 many bands from around the country, that were far less talented than some of the Lehigh Valley talent, were thrown into the national spotlight while the musicians and bands of the area were overlooked. “Give credit where credit is due” is what is often said and with this CD, we do just that! The musicians and bands of the Lehigh Valley area, without question, DESERVE that!
With this CD, we tried to put together the best collection of hard rock/metal bands from the area during this time period. There are some musicians we simply could not track down or gain access to their material. There were also countless other talented bands and musicians from the Lehigh Valley that did not fit in this particular genre of hard rock or Heavy Metal. From The Armadillo’s to Bam Bamm, to Magnum, to Craig Thatcher, to Gandalf, to Daddy Licks and the endless other bands that made up the ENTIRE Lehigh Valley music scene from 1984 to 1994, we salute you as well!! From all spectrums of music, the Lehigh Valley music scene was unquestionably filled with tremendous talent!
This double CD is dedicated to each and every person that took part not only in a music scene, but a very special time in ALL of our lives. From the musicians and the bands, the promoters, club owners, radio DJ’s, media and right down to the fans and friends of all the local bands, THIS CD IS FOR YOU!! For those that weren’t around the Lehigh Valley at that time or weren’t old enough to participate, this CD might be your first sampling of a very special time in the Lehigh Valley music scene. Many of the musicians featured on this CD are still currently playing throughout the “Valley” in different musical projects. Many of these bands are also currently looking to re-release some their full length demos. Be sure to check into some of the great releases from these bands! There is a lot of great music to enjoy.
Currently, we are hard at work on the upcoming documentary of the hard rock/heavy metal scene in the Lehigh Valley from this time frame. An early spring release date is expected for this. Our goal with these releases is a simple one, to let all those that come in contact with them, that without a shadow of a doubt, then, now and always, THE LEHIGH VALLEY ROCKS!!
