Camp Summary
The second Swim BC 12&U Provincial Camp got underway at UBC on November 3, 2007, with talks from two medalists at the FISU World University Games held last August in Bangkok, Thailand.

Annamay Pierse and Darryl Rudolf (in photo at right) spoke to the swimmers about their swimming careers, how things didn’t always come easily, how there were many challenges and setbacks along the way, but with dedication, hard work, perseverance and a commitment to continually get better, they were each able to set superb personal benchmarks this past summer.
Annamay achieved new National records in both 100 and 200 Breast, and Darryl was able to drop his PB in 100 fly from 54.2 to 52.9 en route to winning a gold medal at FISU Games.

And, it was shortly after this talk that Annamay was in the pool at the Thundersplash meet, where she improved the Provincial short-course record in 200 breast, swimming 2:26.64.

Following these inspirational talks, it was time to get into the pool for the first of our two pool session. This one was done in the outdoor pool at the UBC Aquatic Centre, and despite it being cool and drizzly, the swimmers got into the pool and did a good job.

That first pool session focused on freestyle, paying attention breakout strokes, breathing pattern, stroke counts and maintaining consistency in both stroke count and swim time.

After the pool session, the swimmers chowed down on some subs, granola bars, and PowerBars, and then viewed some world-class swimming on video (watching dolphin kicking action in particular) before heading out to the indoor pool to watch some of the swim meet which was ongoing.

Following this was some dryland time back in the classroom, where the swimmers worked on streamline positioning, and this had a very positive impact once we got back into the pool for our final pool session.

That second pool session involved some IM swimming, with the primary emphasis being to maintain a good streamline, even while getting a little fatigued. The 25s, 50s, 75s and 100s were very well done, with the swimmers’ streamlining staying much more consistent and strong all the way through the set.

At the same time this was going on, Cory Beatt was leading a number of parents through a presentation on the development and progression of a swimming career.

After that, it was time to toss out a few prizes, and then time to go home.

Swim BC wishes to thank VPSC Head Coach, Tyler Lewall for his efforts in selecting the team and for making the necessary facility arrangements, as well as for recruiting Annamay and Darryl to deliver such inspiring talks to the swimmers.
We would also like to thank those two swimmers for giving of their time right before the meet, as well as to Hyack, VPSC, and CDSC for supporting this event with both swimmers and coaches.http://livepage.apple.com/
