Sabbath

Today we heard a sermon on rest, or sabbath.  Dan spoke about the importance of resting on Sunday (or one day a week).   “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) was his motivational verse.  He reminded us of our desire to be busy and how we actually brag about breaking one of the Ten Commandments -- “I haven’t taken a day off in 3 weeks!”  “I am so busy, I am so tired -- I was up all night working on ...”
SO, I was thinking “I hope you are listening Darrell.  He is talking about getting enough sleep!  Do you hear this?  He is talking about REST!”  (Don’t we love to correct others?)  I mean, I slept in this morning.  I take naps during the week.  I am not too busy for friends.  Ha.
Then he said that when we don’t rest we aren’t trusting God.  We think we have to micromanage everything in our life or the lives of people around us.  Oops.  Of course he didn’t mean that I shouldn’t worry so much about my kids and making sure they are the right track to...what?  Already I am worrying about how Lauren will make friends when she enters public school in 1st grade.  I know, I will search high and low for a friend for her.  I will scour the local parks looking for a girl who will be in her class and we will invite them over.  Then she will be OK.  Then her life will be in my control...until I wake up in the middle of the night with another fear about their future.
So there is a rest from the work of worry.  There is a peace knowing that you don’t have to micromanage every aspect of your family’s life.  There is a peace knowing that God is more powerful than me... “Be still and know that I am God.”   So today I will rest from the worry that my kids are watching too much TV, or eating too much high fructose corn syrup.
