Monday was great with the Rogue’s Gallery show in London. I wasn’t so crazy about my song though - if we do this show again maybe I will pick something else. The show was 3 hours and 40 minutes long. Beth Orton never showed! Oh well. Some great pix though. I was happy to spend time talking to Robyn Hitchcock. I sang his song “Chinese Bones” with The Greatful Dead back in 1988 at Madison Square Garden so his name and lyrics have been associated with a big shining moment in my life. I know I have said this three times now on this blog. Well it was a big deal for me.
Sandy Dillon was a new discovery for me. The Carthy Family was wonderful to watch. One memory is sharing a mike with Teddy Thompson in the chorus, trying desperately to follow whatever song Baby Gramps was singing, something about a lovely mermaid, then the next thing I knew we were both bellowing “Lovely oyster! Lovely oyster!” and dissolving into giggles. My brain was twirling for days with pirate songs.
I told Richard Strange I thought he did a great job with “Good Ship Venus” which Hal had given me originally, but it’s such a filthy song I decided against it. Although he did a good job he complained “It starts off so graphically! And then it just gets worse!!” True. That’s Martha Wainwright above who I was sharing a dressing room with at the Barbicon.
And now we have just finished the Dranouter Festival here in Belgium. Crazy Belgians! I love them. They were great, again. Thankfully. Also how grateful I am to be over this attack of Pityriasis Rosea which I had been struggling with for weeks. What a mess. Home tomorrow.
