I am here in Coutances where it has suddenly started thrashing down rain. It’s a sold out show tonight and the director of the theater has told me that it’s an honor to have me and a big night for them. This makes me very happy! Here is what I like: when the promoter for example (in Chateaubriant) is so happy at selling out the theater that he buys you a little box of chocolates, which are a local delicacy, which are so rich and filled with alcohol you practically have to eat each one with a spoon, as they come in their own individual cups. Woof. Yum! Yes, please.
The feeling of a tour going well and spreading happiness is incomparable. Here is what I hate; when the tickets aren’t selling well, and the venues and promoters let you know in a million little and big ways that you really aren’t up to much, and that they are doing you a favor by even letting you in the building. But why dwell on that now? Let’s just anticipate a good evening where everybody is happy to be where they are for an hour and twenty minutes.
A funny few gigs lately - yesterday my husband Paul came onstage and translated for me which went very well. I didn’t announce that he was my husband so some people didn’t figure it out. I did announce that he was a criminal defense lawyer, however.
The night before, in Lille I made a huge mistake. I asked “What kind of woman is the city of Lille?” I heard some kind of “woarrr” sound coming back at me. So I jumped to the wrong conclusions. Oops. Turned out they meant “warm”. Lille is a warm good hearted woman. In case you thought she was anything else!
In Alencon during “NY Is A Woman” my eyes began to swell and tear and the mascara began pouring down my face. I had to stop and mop it all up with a tissue, apparently after shouting “Jesus Christ!” into the microphone (I have no memory of this).
Which led one woman in the audience to say, “Suzanne is from London!” to Phil. “No, she is from New York.” he said. “But women from New York say ‘Oh my God!’” the woman continued. “Women from London say ‘Jesus Christ!’.” You learn something new every day.
