The first of these altars -- quilted, pieced fabric stretched usually on a house-shaped internal frame -- was a breakthrough piece for me, a form that spoke and still speaks with power. Central images are hand-painted with dye, screen-printed, photo transfered on fabric, pieced as a fabric collage or with a combined mixed media technique. Each image is made sacred by the richness, natural and manmade, of the Texas Borderlands, a region where cultures connect, where the desert meets savannah, where birds, people and languages migrate. These works capture my belief in the sacredness of the everyday.
