Spring 2009 Fiber CSA

Hudson Valley Fiber Farm Spring 2009 Share

If you knit, crochet, or spin you have almost certainly dreamed of owning your very own flock of sheep or goats. Unfortunately, living in the City (or even the suburbs) makes it very hard to get in touch with your inner Little Bo Peep. What’s a would-be shepherdess to do?

Our Yarn CSA can make your dream a reality! You can purchase a share of our Spring 2009 clip and we’ll take care of all the tedious details (like trimming hoofs, feeding during snowstorms and cleaning all the poopy hay out of the barn.)

Here’s How it Works

When you purchase a share in our CSA you are investing in our Spring 2009 “yarn harvest” of Kid Mohair and cormo woo. You’ll receive an shareholders certificate, weekly farm updates on what’s going on around the farm, and an invitation to our Shearing Day Celebration. (And if you get the urge to shovel poopy hay while you're here, we’ll lend you a shovel.)

The money we receive from the shareholders will be used to purchase hay and feed for the animals and to increase the size of our flock. Our 16 pregnant nanny goats will be giving us kids between February and May and all of those kids will be sheared for the first time in the Fall, along with all the other goats.

After shearing, we’ll let our friends at the mill work their magic and soon you’ll receive your share of the harvest. The number of skeins, yardage, etc., will depend on the size of the clip but we ado limit the number of shareholders so that everyone gets a bountiful supply. We shear the Angora goat and our flock of fine wool sheep in the Spring, so this harvest will be cormo fiber and a kid mohair/cormo blend. (WARNING: The kid mohair/cormo combo is amazing. You'll never want to knit with anything else.)

We’ve priced our CSA at $150 per share but for the next two weeks we are taking $10 off the price. Of course you’re welcome to buy as many shares as you like (while they last!) and a Yarn CSA share makes a great gift for all the knitters and crocheters in your life. If you're a spinner's share you can purchase a  "spinner's share" in the form of raw fleece or roving.

Our farm practices humane animal husbandry, we are "predator friendly" and none of our animals are ever sold for meat. The sheep and goats graze on organic pasture 9 months out of the year. We supplement with quality hay and a custom-made whole grain ration.
