I wanted to be an actress in 1912; I want to be an actress today.  That walk from the darkness to backstage through the door or opening in the scenery where I make an entrance into the bright lights with that big dim mass out beyond, which bursts into applause, then the first terrifying sound that comes out of my throat, which they describe as a voice, but that first instant it is the siren of terror and intention and faith and hope and trust and vanity and security and insecurity and bloodcurdling courage which is acting”

------Ruth Gordon (1896-1985)

                                           THE COLONY THEATRE

"I have a special place that's very close to my heart - and that place is the Colony Theatre.  I've done many performances there, and it's like a second home.  When you walk in to the lobby, you can smell a burst of clean linen, with the slight fragrance of flowers......The stage area smells slightly chalky and like sweaty dance shoes,  Surprisingly, it smells good to me.........You can look out and see an ocean of red velvety seats, with little gold plaques on the bottom telling the seat numbers.  .......If you tape a mike to your cheek, it feels sticky and itchy.  .....up to the right is the girl's dressing room!  On each wall, there is a long stretch of mirror, with light bulbs above it.  Immediately, the scent of make-up and perfume fills your nostrils.  The long tables beneath the mirrors are filled with bags of make-up and have stools beneath them so the girls can sit and apply make-up.  There is lipstick, blush, eyeshadow, and foundation everywhere.  To be honest, it looks like something blew up in there!......and then back to the stage......I don't know how you feel when you stand on this stage, but I feel amazing.  I remember all the times I've been on this stage, singing, dancing, having the time of my life.  I feel a rush of happiness up there, as I look out on the chairs, the lighting booth, and the bright lights above me.  I feel like a star.  All the memories of my productions and just how amazingly happy I feel standing on the Colony Theatre's stage is what makes this place special to me."
