After reading this article about Rome in the New York Times, I wish we could bypass Rome altogether on our trip to Italy in September.
My brother, his girlfriend, and I will be traveling to Italy with the main goal of visiting relatives and friends and deciding what can be done about the condition of our neglected home in Puglia. We thought it would be nice to spend three nights in Rome, since we haven’t visited the city in a long time and my brother’s girlfriend has never been there, but now that tourists who can think of nothing better to do in Rome but drink all night, with the complicity of a city government that turns its head, have transformed the Eternal City into another Baja at spring break, I wish we could just skip Rome, and go to Siena or Assisi instead. Could you imagine Audrey and Gregory or Anita and Marcello (a different kind of decadent) amidst beer bottles and trash?
