Medicine soup

I haven’t had a cold in a couple of years, but when I get one it’s a whopper - like the one I have now.

I’ve tried everything in the last 24 hours, from homeopathic to allopathic, to aromatherapy. all to no avail. So I made myself a soup.

I filled a small pot with filtered water and added chopped maitake mushrooms, peeled and chopped baby sweet potatoes (the ones with the yellow flesh), abundant chopped fresh ginger, abundant powdered turmeric, and let it boil until all was tender. At this point I added a handful of Dulse and let it cook for a minute or two. Then I turned off the flame and added a large handful of baby spinach, soy sauce, and the tiniest, invisible speck of cayenne. (It needs a lot of soy sauce or miso paste, otherwise it is too bland.)

Even that tiny amount of cayenne was almost too much, and if I had remembered that I have cilantro growing in a pot right outside my door I would have it used it too. Some lemon juice would have been a nice addition. Anyway, I enjoyed it, but it didn’t do a thing for my cold.

I bought one of these today, it’s an organic Arkansas Black Heirloom apple. I’d never seen one before - very pretty and very sweet.

I think I’ll go make myself some ginger and honey tea. It probably won’t help either, but I like it.
