St Luke’s has a vision –
Beginning 6.30am every day people gather from all over the world coming and going joining in the prayer of many languages and tongues. The face of many nations would be surprising but perhaps not unexpected by the Victorians who built the church! They had a vision for a church for every person in the U.K. St Luke’s today is a vision for a church for the Gentiles, people from every tribe and language, the more the better of the Lord’s gathering for Revival.“....a house of prayer for all nations” (Isaiah 56.7).
History – turning points
1893 - 1907 Vicar Evan Hopkins, who played a leading role in the early years of the influential Keswick Convention, was a friend of Charles Spurgeon, the noted Baptist preacher and author. Hopkins started prayer meetings in the church and built the Mission hall in Adrian Mews.
1993 Bill Heald (the current vicar) appointed. Although the church was then fairly traditional, it was clear that Bill, as a New Zealander, would bring a fresh approach. At the time, Bill was inspired to come here by God’s promise to Abraham that “all peoples on earth will be blessed through you,” (Genesis 12.3).
1994 Monthly Persian service established
1995 Recently-appointed Archdeacon, Malcolm Colmer, preached in St LUKE’S with the memorable message that St Luke’s should “pray, pray, pray” – a strong affirmation of the emerging vision.
1997 Russian speakers began joining St Luke’s and the church became bilingual.
1999 First Korean joins followed by an influx of Koreans in 2002.
2002 “Missionary and Monastic.” - the church becomes its vision called and empowered.
2003 Visit of Senior Pastor Abraham Park and team from Pyung Kang Che-IL Church, Seoul.
2004 Seoul for Souls Conference with Pastor Yoon and team from Yonsei Central Baptist Church in Seoul
2006 Building Project, four years in the making, begins – the excavation of the Undercroft with the doubling of space on the site. See more info on Building Project>>
September 2007 St Lukes Building Project is completed, and the church and undercroft is rededicated by the Bishop of Kensington, the Rt Revd Michael Colclough, Thursday 13 September
