Recycling @ St Helena’s

Our Recycling Journey Has Begun

IN THE OFFICE

Sustainable practices have been adopted throughout
St Helena’s Catholic Primary School.
The office staff identified that waste paper which was being sent to waste
and implemented the recycling of paper in the office and throughout the school.
Most types of paper and cardboard is recycled into paper bins which is then emptied into the VISY recycle bin.  This is emptied weekly and we hope reused for other products.
We also have a system in place to recycle our printer and photocopier toner cartridges. All cartridges are recycled. In addition to these measures our old computers are also sent to a local TAFE college for students to dismantle and rebuild.

AROUND THE SCHOOL
Students put all their food scraps from recess and lunch into scrap buckets. At the end of the day one of our teachers takes the food scraps home and feeds them to her chooks. The chooks look forward to the tasty food scraps and when they see the buckets they come running and start pecking at them. To thank us they lay lots of yummy eggs.

SCHOOL DRY-CELL BATTERY COLLECTION PROGRAMME

Dry cell batteries are those batteries that we use in every day items such as radios, cameras and children’s toys. When batteries are land filled, their casings disintegrate and metals and chemicals used within the battery can leach into the surrounding environment. In order to prevent this happening, a school collection program to capture batteries from the household waste stream, ensuring disposal does not damage our sensitive environment has begun at St. Helena’s. Please bring along those DEAD batteries only to your class and place them in the container provided

MINI VINNIES CLOTHING DRIVE
We are working together with 29 other schools in Perth to help those in need this winter. Together we have collected 25 tonnes of clothing. This equates to 8333 entire outfits including shoes.
