Podcasts are audio files generated by podcasters. (students in this case) They are relatively easy to create and don't require high-priced equipment, allowing teachers to record without a large investment of time or money by the school. In addition, the RSS technology downloads new podcasts automatically. The podcasts can be listened to on a computer or any device like an iPod that can  play audio files.
