Parent Council Documents

What is it?

A Parent Council is a group of parents that meets regularly with school staff to represent all parents of kids who attend a particular school. Since a new law was introduced in August 2007, Schools Boards have been replaced by Parent Councils - along with something called a Parent Forum. All parents of children who attend any given school are automatically part of the Parent Forum. Our Parent Council is a small number of parents from the Parent Forum for Gracemount High School – and, it could be you if you want it to be.

Who’s involved?

The present members of the Parent Council are listed on the next page but all parents are welcome and if you’d like to become a regular member, just let us know. Being a member doesn’t mean you have to come to every meeting – there’s lots of ways to get involved and coming along to just one meeting to find out more, is one way. The next planned meeting date is Thursday 11 June 2009. All meetings are held at 7.00pm in the school meeting room.

What does it do?

The Parent Council takes action on pretty much anything that affects school life. Its job is to listen and respond to parents’ views on the things that matter to them. For example, over the past few months we’ve written to the Council and local MSP’s about the threat of budget cuts which would have had a significant impact on the school. Gladly, the Council decided not to impose additional cuts this year and it just might be that it listened to the many Parent Councils across Edinburgh who spoke out against the threat. We constantly look at different ways that we can find out the opinions of other parents and we’re currently considering online options, like a social networking site or a blog!

We’ll keep you posted on this – keep an eye out for something in the next school newsletter.

Ideas Box

If you’ve got an idea, want to raise an issue or express an opinion about any aspect of school life, that you want the Parent Council to do something about, you can post it in the Parent Council Ideas Box outside the school office. Just note down what it is you want to say along with your name and a contact phone number or E-mail address. You don’t have to give your name if you’d prefer not to, but bear in mind that this would mean the Parent Council can’t contact you directly to give you feedback!
