The All New
Commonplace Blog
is where you’ll find anything
that’s caught my attention from day to day

Meanwhile you’ll find me in a slightly more reflective mood in
The Bumblebee Blog

For example On going to Kington is a celebration of two old ladies

On One Horn is a celebration of a old ewe
and On hay (making) a celebration of an old, and disappearing, way of life

Also in danger of disappearing is any meaningful regional identity on ITV

So here’s an article I wrote for Ann Clwyd MP when Ann was shadow heritage secretary and I was her senior researcher in the House of Commons and here’s an open email I sent to Michael Grade boss of ITV

And this is where you’ll discover why there are no full stop at the end of my paragraphs

There’s photography

This is my favourite picture from my flickr site
If it’s pictures you’re looking for then flickr is worth checking out
You’ll find me there most days

And no more than a couple of clicks away you’ll find four short films - Mastermind, Mud Race, Market Square and Mini Marr which are part of the General Election coverage 2005 by Look North in BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

And as with all good movie makers there’s a trailer too

After the Ban is Look North’s documentary on the first days of the hunting ban

The Only Shop in the Village is a very funny take on a very simple story

There’s also The Only...Rocket Scientist...Blacksmith and...Taxidermist

Gang Masters is a clip from an undercover investigation

And Mrs Kent is a very revealing interview with the Duchess of Kent. The interview is also on YouTube

The Valentine’s Day Murder of Joanne Nelson
won the Royal Television Society nations and regions news award

This is just some of my television work. More than anything else here this has been a team effort

Click here if you want to check it out

Plus there’s radio where you will find a wide variety of Punter podcasts all from the days when we called them programmes

There’s a 1991 Downing Street interview with the prime minister John Major

And pieces from Farming Today and from The Today Programme on Radio 4 plus others from Radio Five Live and BBC Hereford and Worcester my spiritual home

Some are very serious - there’s a 15 minute mini-documentary on crofting as a model for post surplus farming - and some like the two chants - the fat stock prices and the market report for Children in Need - that are not

Neither is Udder cream an April Fools

This is my favourite piece. It has rhythm, character, and a sense of community and I love it

And only in Herefordshire would you hear:

‘The Americans - they are queer all together’

And

‘They won’t grow Merrill, they won’t grow’

Where material is not mine, or where there has been a creative collaboration, I will always try to acknowledge the other artists and authors. See individual pages for credits

There are many people who deserve thanks for helping during different points in my career and who’ve been willing, even eager, to share their precious supply of pixie dust with me - John Springall, Robert Lacy, John Pickles, Bob Jones, Nick Pollard, and Helen Thomas

And then there’s the hundreds and thousands of people I’ve met and whose stories I’ve been lucky enough to tell

First words gives you more of a flavour of what’s on here
and introduces you to just some of them

Where appropriate
I’d like to be recognised as the author
publisher and creator of this work
 - in all - not many rights reserved
