Phonology, the study of the pronunciation of meaning, is an integral part of English orthography. What is definitively not part of English spelling is the linguistically incoherent and dishonest parody of pronunciation that is The Great Phonics Hoax.
Until recently, the latest in the succession of edubabbling bandwagons has been ‘phonemic awareness’, a caricature of the English phoneme that is a confusion of phonology and phonetics that manifests ignorance of both.
Tidal waves of self-fulfilling ‘research’ whose basic assumptions about the phoneme have never been verified or even questioned have resulted in schools being stifled by schemes and systems based on this gross misrepresentation of the English phoneme.
The time is now ripe for us to rescue the English phoneme from the ravages of the Phonemic UNawareness Brigade and to install it in its proper and linguistically authoritative place in the representation of sense and meaning that is the English spelling system.
