Real English orthography is highly structured, coherent and predictable.
Since the flow chart is a schematic representation of the conditional logic of a process, it is an ideally appropriate tool for representing spelling’s inherently ordered structures and processes.
Flow charts have three broad functions:
  1. they give a rigorous representation of the English suffixing conventions and their application;
  2. they are a dynamic constructional and checking device;
  3. they can provide a powerful learning route to internalizing the suffixing procedures.
