the English spelling system
as it really is
The real English spelling system is:
highly ordered
coherent and consistent
“a near optimal match for the lexical representation of English” (Chomsky)

Real spelling is simply a presentation of the linguistic facts of the English orthographic system:
  1. undisguised by invented terms, codes,  gimmicks or tricks,
  2. undistorted by spurious ‘rules’ and their inevitable ‘exceptions’.
Real spelling is not a ‘method’, 'scheme' or ‘system’ external to the actual structure of English orthography:
  1. it is based throughly on knowledge and processes that are established and validated in real linguistics.
Real spelling doesn't package and limit what spelling activities are required to be the subject of a curriculum or timetable,
  1. but its resources support and promote spelling activity at all levels of need and opportunity.
Real spelling can in itself provide all that is needed to make orthography a cognitive and linguistic reality in schools as well as in 'language rescue' situations.
Real spelling can also complement, expand and enrich the specifically orthographic elements of any literacy or Language Arts programme(s) that you already have in place.
