Kids Kan
Another successful year of the Kids Kan food drive wrapped up last week in schools across Shelby County. At Southwind Elementary School, students donated 5,767 cans of food for the Mid-South Food Bank’s annual collection campaign. Principal Sue Jones is extremely excited about this year's big turn out, as it marked the highest total ever collected in school history. Way to go!
Black History Month Program
Students and staff members have been engaged all month in interesting lessons and exciting activities celebrating Black History Month. The highlight event of the month was a special stage production that debuted recently- a play, entitled “Grandma's Closet.” This story was written by Ms. Judy Davenport, a fourth grade teacher at Southwind. Students brought the story to life for an audience of classmates, parents, and staff members.
Miss Tennessee
Miss Tennessee, Ellen Carrington, recently made a stop at Southwind. She spoke to the students about how important it is for them to set goals and achieve their dreams. She also spoke on how doing drugs not only hurts your body, but your family and friends as well.
Jump for Heart
On Feb. 12th Southwind Elementary had their Jump for Heart to raise money for the American Heart Association. 92 jumpers jumped in teams for 1 hour and raised about $2000. All the money that was raised will be donated to the AHA to support research for heart disease and stroke. All the jumpers had a great time jumping with single ropes, with long ropes,double-dutch, and jumping with hula hoops. Thank you to all the teachers, students and parents that helped support this fundraiser for our community.
SOSA Boys Play During Grizzlies Game
The SOSA boys basketball club enjoyed a memorable night with the Memphis Grizzlies as they took the court in front of Griz fans for a half-time scrimmage during the Grizzlies-Nets game. SOSA is a basketball club for students in grades 4 and 5. SOSA stands for Students of Southwind Achieve. These students were able to enter the arena early and watch the players on both teams warm up. They were also able to get a few autographs, including one from former Memphis Tigers star and current New Jersey Nets rookie, Chris Douglas-Roberts. The Grizzlies were outstanding hosts of Southwind’s SOSA students, and everyone had an awesome time!

Sparkle Day
Saturday, October 4th parents, students, and teachers met at the school and gave time to plant flowers and take care of the school grounds. After it was over there was a cookout for all of the volunteers. Everyone that was there had a wonderful time! Click HERE to visit our PTA’s website and see more pictures. A big thank you goes out to our new beautification chair, Katie Banks, for organizing this event.
Lee National Denim Day-Breast Cancer Awareness
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. That’s a startling statistic! But since 1996, Lee National Denim Day has raised more than $70 million for the fight against breast cancer ... $5 at a time. On Denim Day, Oct. 3, teachers at Southwind pledged to wear jeans and each donate at least $5 to the Women’s Cancer Programs of the Entertainment Industry Foundation. Click HERE for more information about Lee National Denim Day and information about our team, coordinated by our guidance counselor, Mrs. Dildine.
Buzzly Fire Safety
Sometimes it’s not what you say, but how you say it that makes it stick with an audience. The Shelby County Fire Marshall’s Association and the PTA seem to think that sending in a seven-foot tall bee into the school is the best way to deliver the important message of fire safety! Buzzly the bee was recently at Southwind for an amazing program where the students learned what to do in case of a fire. It was a wonderful presentation that included something for everyone! Click HERE for more information or click HERE to see some of the pictures from the day.
Math Fact of the Day
Beginning Monday, September 22nd Southwind Elementary will kick off the Math Fact of the Day program. Students in grades K-2 will have an addition fact and students in grades 3-5 will have a multiplication fact. Teachers will review these with their students constantly throughout the school day by making them write it on their papers and recite it during transition times.
