Although as my parents would agree that it was not theirs.
After obtaining a diploma in fashion in Brussels, I discovered animation and I was immediately seduced. I was particularly interested in giving life to characters.
I finished 2 animation schools including the “GOBELINS” in Paris. Then, I was hired by Walt Disney and began my animation career. I was overjoyed...but in time I realised there were also many compromises to be made. At that time, my fiancé had already started freelancing in animation and after a while I decided to join him and return to Luxembourg.
We had so much work that we suddenly realised it wasn't possible to handle it all on our own.
The solution was to create a company and employ more people and after several years of subcontracting on feature animation for US majors & Europeans studios, we decided to produce our own animated films. I was young and full of passion...
This was a turning point in my artist's life because from that moment, I became a producer and therefore I no longer had the time to draw.
I used to tell myself that I was doing it for a good reason and that once I finished that new movie, I would change my life for good ! I was exhausted and trapped between commitments, promises I had made and my creativity.
Today I feel I have taken back my artist's life and as expected it has been one of the happiest moments of my life.
Passion pushes us to challenge ourselves. It might be a way to test ourselves somehow. We must go through this experience, learn lessons and only after can we finally realise : Finding happiness is simpler than we thought…
I love making illustrations, putting characters in a situation, and tell a story. This is something I need to explore much more especially by combining what I‘ve learned. Right now, I am concentrating on realistic paintings because I missed them during all my time in the animation industry.
My favourite “world” is the one of fairies & mythology.
I love painting children fairy-tales, especially strange ones or even a bit scary, but not totally dark because I don’t like unjustified violence or too ”cruel“ concepts.
A few of my most favourite Directors are: Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, Ridley Scott, George Lucas, Peter Jackson, Vincenzo Natali,... Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, John Milius.
I like dark fantasy but I used to paint happy stories as my background was animation for a young audience. Even so, as I am in a different stage of my life it is probable I will soon paint something totally different.
Welcome to My Side World,
Sophia
