The National Foreign Language Honor Societies held their induction ceremonies at Riverhead High School on May 15, 2008. Seventeen students were inducted into the French Honor Society; fourteen students were inducted into the Latin Honor Society; and forty-three students were inducted into the Spanish Honor Society for a total of 74 students.

In order to qualify for the National Foreign Language Honor Society, a student must maintain a 90% or higher throughout three years of study of a language other than English and maintain an overall average of 85% or higher.

Mrs. Shirley Cepero, Assistant Principal for Academic Supervision, began the ceremony by greeting and congratulating the students and their guests. French teacher, Mrs. Barbara Nystrom, who is retiring in 2008, was honored in a special ceremony for her many years of service to the students in the Riverhead Central School District.

Mrs. Laura Grable, the District’s lead teacher mentor and a former Spanish teacher and native of Cuba who emigrated to the United States, spoke about the importance of learning other languages and the impact that experience has on understanding other cultural viewpoints in a global society.
