History of the Model A Ford Mail Truck

     The Postmaster General of the United States, in order to save money and develop a uniform fleet of post vehicles, and with authorization of Congress, proceed to develop the mail truck. The first vehicles hit the road in 1929 with a Ford Chassis and wooden body built by private manufacturers to Postal Department specifications. 4300 vehicles were built between 1929 and 1932.      This was a self-help organization established in 1977 and recognized by the Model A Ford Club of America.  Its aim  was to gather information to develop a standard for the Model A Mail Truck.  This led to 15 years of newsletters consisting of 800  pages.  Information collected became the comprehensive and singular book, “The Ford Model A Mail Truck.”  The organization has been in existence for nearly 30 years and continues to support and assist in the restorations of this outstanding vehicle.
