The Islam has once more come to be regarded the enemy of the West, a hostile world anchored in the past unable to deal with the problems of our time. Jordi Esteva in his book Mil y una voces (El País/Aguilar) is set on subverting this conception of the Islam through the testimony of sixteen voices who make us realize that our neighbouring countries in the immediate south have a much more complex reality than the one we imagine. For one thing, they are undergoing a very convulsive process to be able to catch up with globalization . Mil y una voces wants to offer us a more diverse and plural vision of that world which the West has turned into the synonym of fanaticism. Thus Esteva has searched for the voices of jurists, sociologists, writers, film directors, among whom there are several brave women, who fight from within their own societies for a greater freedom.
