McCloud
Sunday, May 4, 2008
Last weekend Gary, Ryan, Matt and I fished the McCloud River in Northern California for the opener. Matt and I left Reno at midnight on Friday and drove through the night to get to the river.  We got to the campsite a little after 4 am and woke up Gary and Ryan.  We planned to fish The Nature

Finally- Success at Pyramid
Monday, April 14, 2008
I picked up Matt at 4:15 Saturday morning and by 4:30 we had picked up Rich and were on our way to Pyramid Lake.  Matt had been to the lake earlier in the week and had caught tons of fish on nymphs from some rocks on the shore of the lake, no ladder!  We got to the lake at about 5:15 and staked

Ryan came up from San Francisco this weekend for some fishing in the Reno area.  We hit the Truckee River Saturday morning, it was a little windy and the river was running a little high and slightly off color. Ryan caught two decent trout and a whitefish at the first spot we tried, but I was

Cuttbow Craziness
Wednesday, March 19, 2008
So today was probably one of the best fishing days of my life.  I fished for less than 2 hours, and in that time I landed 9 fat trout and one whitefish (pictured above).  I fished with an Indi-Caddis and three nymphs: golden stone on top, green Hotwire Prince in the middle, and a Skwala stone

Fatty Brown
Monday, March 17, 2008
Sunday morning dawned cold and windy, with a dusting of snow from Saturday night’s little storm that blew through the Sierras this weekend.  The forecast indicated that the day was supposed to warm up to about 45º, so I decided to go ahead and go fishing.  The flows have come back down and the

Windy Day
Friday, March 14, 2008
I got out and fished for two hours today at the same park I fished at on Wednesday.  Today was even windier and the flows have come up a bit, which colored up the water a little.  I didn’t catch anything in the hole that produced last time, though I did hook the same big fish on the far bank and

Good Afternoon
Thursday, March 13, 2008
Yesterday afternoon I fished the Truckee River at a park here in Reno.  It was a very windy afternoon, which made casting difficult, but I just got a new fly line for my birthday which made it easier.  I went back to the Scientific Anglers WF GPX line, my last line was the Rio multi-tip and I

Quick afternoon session
Monday, March 3, 2008
Ryan came up from San Francisco this weekend for one day of snowboarding and one day of fishing on the Truckee River.  He rode at Squaw Valley on Saturday with some friends from the Bay Area and ended up taking a bad fall and hurting his shoulder.  Due to cold morning temperatures, we didn’t get

More Winter Angling
Tuesday, February 19, 2008
Saturday Dan and I went fishing at a few spots on the Truckee River here in Reno.  It was another beautiful winter day here in the Eastern Sierras, with temperatures in the mid fifties.  I got to the river before Dan, and was surprised to see two other guys fly fishing in my favorite spot.  I hit

Winter Angling
Monday, February 11, 2008
This past weekend was a warm and sunny one here on the Truckee River, so of course I went fishing. Friday afternoon I got out for two hours in between school and work, I fished the stretch of water just upstream from downtown.  I tied on a two nymph rig, with a stonefly nymph on top and a red

Steelhead Mission: Day 2
Thursday, January 31, 2008
We got up at about 7:30 on Sunday morning after a long night’s sleep, ready for more steelhead action.  We drove to the same spot we fished Saturday, and this time the parking lot was totally empty.  The river was even more dirty than the day before, but the water level was about the same.  The

Steelhead Mission: Day 1
Tuesday, January 29, 2008
Dan and I left Reno at 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning for the long journey to the Trinity River.  We met Ryan outside of Sacramento at 4:30 and headed up I-5 to the mountains of Northern California.  It rained the whole way up there, but the rain miraculously let up when we turned off the highway on

Steelhead Bonanza
Monday, January 14, 2008
Matt and I left Reno at 3:30 this morning to travel to the Trinity River for some more steelhead action. Dense fog made the drive a little dicey, but we were on the river by 7:45 ready to catch some fish. The first run we hit gave up three fish, including the first of four double hook-ups.  With a

Steelhead Journey
Thursday, January 10, 2008
Sunday morning Matt, Rich and I left Reno at 2 a.m. on an epic journey to the Trinity River in Northern California in a rented Suburban in the middle of the biggest snow storm in years.  Dangerous? Maybe. Stupid? Probably.  We ignored the worries of friends and family and the warnings of TV

First trout of ‘08
Tuesday, January 1, 2008
While most of you were probably sitting around the house nursing hangovers and watching football, I headed out in search of the first trout of the year.  I didn’t go skiing because the snow sucks right now, I’ll have to wait until the end of the week for good snow.  Forecasters are now calling for

Snow Trout
Sunday, December 30, 2007
Today was my turn to freeze my ass off and catch some trout.  I hung around the house until the internet told me that the temperature in Truckee was above freezing, then I headed up the canyon to Boca Reservoir.  The lake was completely frozen over so I had to go with plan B,  the Little Truckee.

Christmas Steel
Sunday, December 30, 2007
While most of us spent quality time with our families on Christmas day, Matt and Dan decided to spend their Christmas chasing steelhead.  Dan escaped the evil clutches of familial obligation by sneaking out to freeze his ass off and catch some fish in New York’s Salmon River.  He started off the

Finally
Thursday, December 6, 2007
The first major winter storm of the season has finally arrived in the Sierras.  After one of the skimpiest snow years on record last year, everybody is hoping for a “normal” snowfall this winter. Last winter’s lack of snow had me fishing in January and February instead of skiing.  The weather

Great Weekend
Monday, November 26, 2007
Gary drove up from San Francisco late Friday night to fish with me this weekend.  We hit the Truckee River Saturday morning around 10, when the temperature finally got above freezing.  It has been very cold here recently, with ice present along the bank all day long.  The fishing started out very

Quick evening session
Thursday, November 15, 2007
Today I fished for a couple of hours at a few spots east of downtown Reno on the Truckee River.  I didn’t get out of class until almost 3:00, so I didn’t have much time to fish before it got dark at 5:30. I got a few 10-12” fish right away, but not the bigger fish I was after.  Last week I hooked
