High Sierra Trout

Windy Day

I got out and fished for two hours today at the same park I fished at on Wednesday.  Today was even windier and the flows have come up a bit, which colored up the water a little.  I didn’t catch anything in the hole that produced last time, though I did hook the same big fish on the far bank and he quickly broke me off again.  Now he’s got two of my golden stone nymphs stuck in his lip.  I moved up to the drift that I finished at on Wednesday and quickly hooked and lost two nice fish.  I tried a couple of other spots and then ran into Doug.  He wasn’t fishing, just stopping by to check out the flows.  We headed back to the spot where I’d hooked those fish and I immediately began hooking up.  The first fish took a golden stone nymph and fought very well. He was a beautiful rainbow with lots of spots (pictured below).

A few casts later I hooked another rainbow, this one was bigger and fought a long downstream battle. After a few minutes I landed the fat cuttbow pictured below and at the top of the page, this fish took a red Copper John.

A few casts later another fish slammed the red Copper John, this fish was smaller but he put up a great fight, jumping several times (pictured below).

I quit at about 2:30, but was happy with my results.  I will probably fish again Sunday if the flows don’t come up too much more, it appears as if spring runoff is just getting under way.
