Physical Therapy & Pilates

Allison Nakisher is a licensed Physical Therapist and trained Stott Pilates instructor.

Stott Pilates applies the most recent advancements in anatomy and biomechanics to the choreography taught by Joseph Pilates in his New York-based studio. Allison completed 150+ hours of classroom education, 150+ hours of supervised teaching, an extensive written exam, and a 3 hour practical exam over a one-year training period.

Pilates is a mind-body exercise system designed to strengthen the weak and challenge the strong.  It requires the conscious control of all muscular movements and focuses on strengthening core postural muscles to keep the body balanced. Through low-impact exercises and stretches performed on specialized equipment, Pilates counteracts the body’s weaknesses and corrects its imbalances.

Allison teaches clients conditioning techniques that can help prevent injury and improve strength, while maintaining long even muscle tone.  The scope of Allison’s Pilates practice has been diverse.  Allison’s clients include anyone from elite athletes to housewives.  Allison conducts both private lessons and group classes.

Another large part of Allison’s practice is Pliates based physical therapy.  Allison has developed a unique method of recognizing and rehabilitating injuries through a combination of Pilates and physical therapy.  This method has allowed her patients to recover faster while enjoying a workout that many of their healthy friends do as well.

Pilates is a good therapy program for patients who have suffered a stroke as well as those with injuries and conditions such as post shoulder surgeries, lower back injuries, arthritis, a torn meniscus, ACL repairs and ankle injuries, to name a few.

With any sort of exercise program, Allison begins with the patient; She takes a holistic look at the individual and determines what approach suits them best.  “The Pilates program answered many of the whys for me that I have always had as a therapist, such as, how do I choose the most appropriate exercises for this individual and why some are better for one patient over another? It really has enabled me to understand the connection between posture and functionality.”
