Is that a White Mountain Cafe sweatshirt... in Antarctica? You bet. And it’s on our pal, Storm Schott, at Cape Evans, not far from the spot where Captain Robert Scott ("We took chances, we know we took them. Things have come out against us; therefore we have no cause for complaint.") started his race for the South Pole.

Storm spent his winter at the US’ Amundsen-Scott base, playing with heavy equipment and, sadly, without his favorite White Mountain Cafe drinks. Sorry, Storm-- that coffee would be just a bit too iced by the time our team of delivery dogs sledded your drink into your hands.

Finally, we have some proof that high-quality coffee drinking and evolution go hand-in-hand.

Here’s our good friend and Cafe regular Kim “Schroeder” Steward, at the Charles Darwin Research Center in the Galapagos Islands... with an old friend. How old? You tell us. But, we’ll tell you one thing. He clearly doesn’t look like he drinks cappuccino. And, he doesn’t look like he’s evolved much in the past, oh, million years.

We rest our case on this, the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth.

Alex and Sara Delucia

It’s t-shirt weather somewhere... and we just found one of those spots, thanks to longtime cafe friends Alex and Sara Delucia.

Here’s what Alex wrote,

“Sara and I were just in south Florida along the Treasure Coast. We were staying with family in Hobe Sound, just north of Jupiter on the east coast. These photos are from a paddle trip on the Loxahachee River, Florida's first National Wild and Scenic River. It was great to get away from the beaches to see some of Florida's interior, it made me feel like a Spanish explorer. Loxahachee means turtle river in Seminal - we saw lots of painted turtles, but several alligators too.”

A far cry from the ice and snow of the North Country. That warm weather actually sounds enticing right now!

Fish, anyone?

This White Mountain Café sweatshirt appearance comes courtesy of customer Jan Flynn. She writes,

“It's wonderfully cool even in mid-July at the southern tip of the burin peninsula of beautiful Newfoundland-lamaline, Newfoundland, canada to be exact. We have a summer home here. We live winters in western Kentucky.

Here you see me visiting the fishermen on the wharf the day after I joined them on a cod-fishing gill net expedition. Mostly, I watched, but my husband-- a North Atlantic fisherman in his younger days-- DID work. We'll try to visit your wonderful cafe on our way back to the states this fall.

Wisconsin Border-- but you already knew that, right?

Our dear pal Laura Conchelos wins the award for Most Enthusiast White Mountain Cafe T-Shirt Wearer. Laura and her pal Rose worked their way from the North Country, west... and west a bit more, then north.... and north a bit more, finally coming to rest in Alaska. We’ll post more photos from their adventures in the coming weeks. Wearing, of course, the fabled WMC shirt.
 And, don’t fret. She’s not overly enthusiastic in all the photos. Honest.

Greenland Ice Sheet

When it’s a little too hot in the North Country, where do our friends go? Back to some snow and ice. Serious snow and ice-- as in, the ice sheet of Greenland, where White Mountain Cafe friend Tad Pfeffer visits every year, as part of his continuing research. Here’s what Tad shared with us:

Here’s a photo of Dan and Dave with the WMC T-shirt.The field work is a joint project between me and colleagues at Universities of Wyoming and Montana (Dan and Dave are grad students from Wyoming and Montana). We're doing near-surface studies of snow physics and hydrology, using radar, pit and core sampling, and temperature measurements. The object is to discover what happens to water once it's produced by surface melt on the Greenland ice sheet - where does it go? Just because it's melted doesn't mean that it escapes and makes it all the way to the ocean (or to the glacier bed) - some fraction of it does, and that fraction can change with changing climate conditions. What we're after is what that fraction and that change is, and how they work.

For those of you interested in hearing more on Tad’s work, he’ll be the speaker at the Randolph Mountain Club’s annual meeting, the second Saturday in August, in Randolph. For more info, see the RMC web site.

Oh, and one more thing: next time, guys, you need to wear the shirt! (Is this grounds for a return trip? Okay, probably not.)

Cape Breton

And... here’s the east coast photo- from Grant Etang, on the Northwest corner of Cape Breton Island, about 16 hours of driving north and east of the White Mountain Cafe.

The Arnolds defintiely have the east-west award. We’ve got photos from the South Pole-- now who wants to head to the North Pole? Any takers?

We now have photos of the White Mountain Cafe shirt from all parts of the world... but there’s always one person who will take things a step further! In this case, it’s Randolph’s Bill Arnold, who managed to get us photos from both the west coast and the east. Thanks Bill!!

Monday, April 21, while most of us were slaving over hot computers, at least a few folks managed to sneak away from their desks and play in the sun and snow. Here’s Alex and Bailey at the top of Hillman’s, after a run in Gulf of Slides. From there, it was down the Sherbie, in time for their pal, Al, to meet his date. (But we digress...)

Spring skiing in King Ravine
