TIDE Today in Minas Basin [2-Day Graph ]  [text format]  NOTE for link to Tide Today:  find the “ + ” on the graph line; it marks Minas Basin tide level now; you can also set other options at the tide site.   The text format also gives Sunrise-sunset
times, and moonrise-moonset times.  Sherm’s October Tide Chart for Horton Bluff now available (pdf)

Google Earth’s largest tides ebb and flow around the “nose” of Blomidon. Twice daily tides surge in and out of the Minas Channel. The height of tide, from low water to high water, ranges between 7 and 16 metres. 12m is about average, depending on Earth’s geometry with Sun and Moon. SAW

Oct 14 Observations of an interesting gathering of Mercury, Venus and Saturn were photographed low in Earth’s eastern, morning sky. Successful observations made mornings of Oct 11, 12 and 14. Photos taken by Sherm: Slideshow

Oct 3-4 Enjoyed watching cloud drifting past the Full Moon. Attempted to capture the view digitally. I tried various exposure settings to capture the cloud texture and the Full Moon. A properly exposed Full Moon does not capture the cloud. Capturing the texture of the moonlit cloud, overexposes the Moon. Two separate exposures were combined to produce this result (225 Kb photo). Compared to the dynamic range built into the camera, the human eye is much more capable of accommodating a wide range of dim and bright light to produce a nicely “exposed” view.

Analemma on Globe: I’ve superimposed the celestial analemma on the globe, similar to how it was done on many school globes 50 and 60 years ago (one exception, instead of mid Pacific Ocean, I’ve placed it in South America, over the meridian of Horton Bluff). It clearly shows the latitude on Earth where the Noon Sun is overhead and the relationship between the analemma and the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.(Last update Nov 9/09, SAW)

Space Station shines by reflected sunlight from its 350 km high Earth orbit. Orbital speed is about 7.5 km per sec; it circles Earth every 92 minutes. ISS gets brighter than Jupiter’s mag -2.8.  The space station’s light shines continuously where as passing aircraft have flashing lights.
